AFO is a member of the YABBY family of transcriptional regulators that is involved in abaxial cell type specification in leaves and fruits. YAB1 acts in a non-cell autonomous fashion within the meristem to affect phyllotactic patterning. The non-autonomous effect on the central region of the meristem is mediated through the activity if Lateral Suppressor (LAS).
